Upright and Forgiving

Olani is grown for form rather than colour: clean green leaves held upright on a tidy plant. One of the more forgiving Alocasia, and a sensible first one if you have not grown the genus before.

These were a fantastic option for someone new to tissue cultures. Seller's communication was spot on. They arrived today and were packed beautifully, with a brilliant, clear guide on how to acclimatise them. Everything was exactly as described in the listing & I will absolutely be keeping an eye out for more Monstera TCs from this seller.

How we check and send it

Most sellers ship whatever the lab sends them. We choose ours, taking the strongest variegation when there is more than one.

Tissue culture plants arrive at the studio sealed, and we keep them that way. Opening the bag lets air in and ends the sterile conditions the plantlet has been growing in, so the bag is not opened until it is in your hands.

We check every plant through the bag instead, judging by the roots and the growing point rather than by appearances. A little leaf dieback inside a sealed bag is normal. What matters is a clean root system and a healthy centre.

Anything that does not meet that standard never leaves the studio. Every plant is photographed the day it is packed, and that photo reaches you before the parcel does.

If something goes wrong

If your plant declines within 7 days of dispatch, email us a photo and we will send a replacement. Replacements go out with the next batch, so please allow some time for it to reach you.

What is tissue culture?

Grown in a lab from a single cutting, so every plant starts clean, pest free and true to type. It arrives as a young plantlet in a sealed bag, ready for you to pot up.

Every plant is a little different

Every plant is a living thing, not a mass-produced object. Small marks, minor scarring or slight asymmetry are part of its natural character rather than a fault. Listing photos are a guide, and the plant you receive will differ.

When it arrives

Three steps to a healthy start

Most plantlets that fail are lost in the first week. These three steps are what make the difference.

Before you open it, take a quick photo of the sealed bag. If anything goes wrong, it helps us sort it out quickly.

Watch it done, from sealed bag to finished pot.

  1. 01
    Rinse off the agar

Swirl the roots in lukewarm water, changing it until no jelly is left. Agar left behind turns to mould within a week.

    Lukewarm waterNo soapNo scrubbing
  2. 02
Pot up and keep it humid

Settle the roots loosely into damp sphagnum moss or half peat, half perlite, with the crown at the surface. Cover with a clear lid.

20 to 26°C2 weeks coveredNo direct sun
  3. 03
    Give it air slowly

Open the lid a little longer each day. The leaf it grew in the lab often drops as new ones form, and that is normal.
